In other industries, the acquiring and merging of companies generally leads to more expensive products and services, and the recent trend of healthcare providers joining one another to create larger hospital systems has many worried about future costs.
Many systems argue that adding more locations and more doctors will give them better control over a population, which could theoretically push costs down. But that has yet to be seen.
D CEO spoke with three North Texas healthcare experts for their opinions: Joel Allison, the former CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health who orchestrated Baylor Health Care System’s 2013 merger with Scott & White Healthcare; Dr. Christopher Crow, independent doctor and the CEO of the Catalyst Health Network, an accountable care organization for independent doctors; and Dr. Daniel Varga, the chief clinical officer for Texas Health Resources.
Specific topics discussed include the benefits of doctors joining an already established system, price transparency and how Dallas is the third most expensive market, and how beliefs have changed since 1994.
