Update on diagnostic, surgical backlog task force coming 'very soon': Gordon

During a news conference Thursday, Health Minister Audrey Gordon said an update is coming “very, very soon” from Manitoba’s backlog task force, which was revealed earlier this year.

 

Doctors Manitoba released statistics last week showing that the backlog for diagnostic and surgical procedures has grown by 7,748 over the last month to a total of more than 161,000 cases.

 

Gordon said the province is in the process of awarding a request for proposal to create a waitlist management system to identify the “true number” of the backlog.

 

Dr. David Matear, Manitoba’s health system co-lead said some services are resuming across the province. Five hundred health care workers who have been redeployed to help with COVID-19 capacity are returning to their normal duties, Matear added.

The province will restore services based on priority such as major or complex surgeries. Matear said facilities like the Health Sciences Centre, Grace Hospital, Victoria General Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital and Brandon Regional Health Centre will have priority to resume major surgeries.
